Ayurvedic treatment for creatinine

What is creatinine?

Creatine is a chemical compound found naturally in the body. It is not a complete protein. It acts as a source of energy that is used by the muscles for contractions. Small amounts of creatine is also found in muscles of the brain, heart and other tissues. Creatine is also found in foods such as milk and milk products, red meat and sea-food etc.

Creatinine is a chemical compound formed from the metabolism of creatine. Creatinine gets removed from blood plasma by glomeruli (in kidneys) and is excreted in the urine. In short, we can also say that creatinine is a waste product that is released from the normal wear and tear of muscles in the body.

What is the normal level of creatinine?

It is absolutely normal to have creatinine in the bloodstream. Higher creatinine levels are considered as an indicator of adverse health risks. Age, race, gender, and body size are the various factors affecting the levels of creatinine.

Kidneys are the filtering organs that maintain the levels of blood components. Kidneys are one of the vital organs that maintain the serum creatinine levels in the body.

Normal Urine creatinine levels are:

• Women: 87 to 107 mL/min
• Men: 107 to 139 mL/min

Normal Serum creatinine levels (Creatinine levels in blood) are:

• Children: 0.3 to 0.7 mg/dL
• Teenagers: 0.5 to 1.0 mg/dL
• Women: 0.5 to 1.1 mg/dL
• Men: 0.6 to 1.2 mg/dL

What are the reasons for high creatinine levels in your body?

There are various reasons found responsible for high creatinine levels in blood. It can be due to reasons like higher intake of protein, intense exercise, etc. Other factors that can raise the levels of creatinine are:

  • Creatine supplements
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Decreased blood flow to kidneys
  • Dehydration
  • Stress or Shock
  • Diseases such as Diabetes, Tumours, Cancer, lupus etc.
  • A few infections like Hepatitis B and C, HIV, Syphilis etc.
  • Over-The-Counter medications like NSAIDs (nonsteroidal  anti-inflammatory drugs), antibiotics, etc.

If any of the above mentioned facts or any other reason is found responsible for high creatinine levels, we can conclude that kidneys are not functioning properly.

Doctors or physicians use creatinine levels as an indicator for the functioning of kidneys. Having high levels of creatinine is not life threatening, but when there is a case of chronic kidney disease, it may be indicating a serious health issue and in future may culminate as Kidney Failure.

Your kidney function status is not assessed with your serum or urine creatinine levels alone. These are always assessed in conjunction with GFR. This conjunction is helpful to know how well your kidneys are functioning.

If a person is carrying high creatinine levels because of any kidney disorder, your doctor will recommend some treatment along with some diet and lifestyle changes that can also be of help.

Ayurvedic Herbal Remedies for Kidney diseases

Ayurveda preaches a healthy way of life. It always works by understanding the root cause of the disease. The way of understanding and treating any disease in view of ayurveda is totally different. Ayurveda assesses any disease on the following parameters- the Dosha, Dushya, Adhishthana of the disease and the capabilities of the patient. After proper identification only ayurveda incorporates appropriate therapeutic interventions. When diagnosing patients with acute kidney failure, it has been observed that people have disturbed agni. This disturbed agni is the cause, due to which the food is not digested properly. The continuous stress, changing lifestyle, intake of incompatible foods, drinking alcohol, chewing tobacco, etc. also contribute to disturbed Agni. There is no terminology as Kidney Failure in Ayurveda but on the basis of pathogenesis, a management plan is decided.

In case of acute kidney failure, the detection and management of the primary cause are essential. Kidney failure confirmation is done by certain blood and urine tests and other scans like CT scans or MRIs.

Acute kidney disease treatment in ayurveda or Mutravahastrotosdushti’s primary treatment is done by treatment of Basti Karma (Enema therapy). Here a medicated enema is used as a detox therapy that is infused through the urinary tract to cleanse the accumulated toxins. This enema also eliminates the aggravated doshas that may have been responsible for kidney complications and diseases. Some herbal medicines used to repair kidney damage are Punarnavadi Guggulu, Gokshuadi Guggulu, and Haritaki etc. Ayurveda also focuses on the way one should live. Therefore person and disease specific diet (Ahaar) and lifestyle (Vihaar) changes are also recommended by Ayurvedic experts to combat kidney disease.

The contemporary system of treatment is costly. Hence, there is a need to find affordable medical care with no side effects. Our ancient system of treatment works on providing sustainable remedial measures. As per Ayurveda, all types of urine disorders are primarily because of Vata dosha, collaborating with Pitta and Kapha doshas. Hence, a person specific treatment (Acute Kidney Disease treatment in Ayurveda) is applied considering Doshas. The proposed line of treatment for kidney failure  is virechana, swedana, mutrapravartaka, raktaprasadaka, agni deepan and sarva dhathu poshaka. There is a concept of pathya-apathyas (compatibles-incompatibles) in ayurveda. Ayurveda medicines include regenerative herbs under the topic of Rasayana Chikitsa, which helps regenerate nephrons.

Herbs like 'Punarnava', 'Gokhuru', and 'Varuna' are always found to be life saviours for patients with chronic kidney disease. 'Varuna' , which is used as a blood purifier, also helps to maintain homeostasis. 'Gokhuru', another herb, is found beneficial in rejuvenation of kidney nephrons.
